NYSG Begins The New Year With New Faces

New York Space Grant Consortium recently expanded its reach in the state by adding a new affiliate member. Over the past year, NYSG has made it a priority to add new affiliates to increase the consortium’s impact on STEM education and outreach in New York. NYSG continues to recognize that there is a need for greater engagement and exposure to NASA and NASA’s Mission Priorities from underrepresented minorities, women, and first generation students. The goal is to enhance diversity of thought and innovation to promote a more inclusive and diverse STEM workforce for the future. During the winter, NYSG opened the opportunity to institutions across the state to apply for membership into our expanding consortium. The newest affiliate member accepted this winter includes nationally recognized, LaGuardia Community College.

While NYSG continues to expand the consortium, there are times when affiliates begin to expand their programming. The increase in productivity creates the opportunity for newcomers to fulfill a much needed role as affiliate director for their respective institution. The Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum is no stranger to the consortium as they host multiple Astronomy Nights throughout the year. Intrepid Museum continues to raise the bar for STEM outreach and STEM engagement activities in New York. With their success, they have selected a new affiliate director, Elysia Segal, to continue the tradition at Intrepid.

Featured below are the newest members additions to the consortium.

LaGuardia Community College - Joshua Tan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Astronomy and Physics at LaGuardia CC, is an optical astronomer interested in observing the counterparts to short period binary millisecond pulsars. Tan holds a PhD in Astronomy from Columbia University, a MS in Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences from University of Colorado, Boulder, and a AB in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University.

Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum - Elysia Segal, Producer of Public Programming at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, she brings the history of the ship to life through theatrical presentations, demonstrations, planetarium shows, and live virtual programming.
