TYLER MEYER: EMBRACING INNOVATION AT BETATRONIX
This week NYSG is highlighting one of our New York Space Grant (NYSG) summer interns, Tyler Meyer. Hailing from West Babylon, NY, Tyler is in the pursuit of a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Manufacturing Systems at the University of Delaware. Tyler completed his summer internship at Betatronix, a proud affiliate of Electro Switch, in Ronkonkoma, NY. NYSG internships require students to complete a rigorous 10-week, 400-hour experience with leading industry partners in the state or various NASA centers. Tyler completed this internship at a local company headquartered in New York, with broad reaching impact in the aerospace, engineering, and space science sectors.
While working at Betatronix this summer, Tyler had the opportunity to work as the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Co-Op. In this position, he spent much of his time working on the production floor, where he would resolve issues that would arise. Tyler would find solutions by modifying respective drawings or by 3D printing, or milling, a tooling fixture that would better aid others in the assembly or sub-assembly potentiometers. After proving his skills and eagerness to be more involved with the engineering team, he began to work alongside the chief engineer troubleshooting and creating new testing processes.
Some of the fixtures he was asked to create would have to be accurate within thousandths, and they were typically used for protection while shipping, as aids in assembly, or for cupping the elements to the housings. Additionally, Tyler had the opportunity to learn a lot about quality control and inspection, while assisting the chief engineer in designing and assembling space rated potentiometers.
Tyler makes note that he was treated like a respected engineer and valuable team member during his time at Betatronix. This was due to his ability to join and be involved in important meetings that detailed critical design and evaluation. Betatronix allowed Tyler to find resolutions to specific issues. Tyler’s summer internship experience exceeded his expectations and built his confidence as an engineering student.
