AeroBing Launch to Success

“The joy of achieving a goal is fleeting, but the satisfaction and growth from the relentless pursuit of a challenge, makes you stronger forever.”

New York Space Grant has been fortunate to assist in funding and promoting opportunities for well deserved students across the state. We had the opportunity to speak with Jacob Goodman and Jeremy Gendler. They are the engineering students that founded AeroBing Rocketry Research Group, which is a student-lead group striving to launch a rocket into space in Summer 2022! Jeremy is a first year graduate mechanical engineering student at Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University. Although Jacob concentrates on AeroBing, he is also a graduate research assistant for Dr. Scott Schiffres in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Binghamton University and a 2021 NYSG Summer Intern for Lockheed Martin.

According to Jacob, AeroBing is the realization of a childhood dream. His dream is to launch a rocket into space. Jacob acknowledges the importance of NYSG funding to his success. Jacob mentioned the support NYSG has for AeroBing has enabled him to pursue his passion on a large-scale, by helping him develop aerospace experience and gain valuable rocketry knowledge.

Jeremy spends dozen of hours crafting essential rocket parts for Aerobing. Jeremy has shown great gratitude to NYSG for assistance in overcoming financial barriers to purchase a lathe to expand AeroBing projects. Jeremy gives credit to the new tools obtained through NYSG funding to improve his skills as a machinist, engineer, and rocketeer.

Recently, the support of NYSG helped AeroBing develop custom motors and conduct a successful launch of a half-scale Ambition-III rocket and static test of a rocket motor in the Mojave Desert. This group continues to push the boundaries of possibility one innovation at a time!
