NYSG Regional Impact Projects

NYSG Regional Impact Projects are competitively awarded up to $18,500 to faculty at NYSG affiliate institutions to propose activities and programs to meet needs of their communities.

NASA New York Space Grant Regional Impact Projects recognize and support work in educational and public outreach, student engagement, and workforce development. New York Space Grant recognizes the need for regionally-focused STEM programming that addresses the challenges specific to different communities in the state, including engaging underrepresented populations. Additionally, New York Space Grant aims to create opportunities for students and the public in New York State to engage with STEM activities in fields of interest to NASA.

Usage of Funds:

Funds may be used for activities that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Competitive awards

  • Ongoing outreach programming

  • Teacher training workshops

  • General public events

  • K-12 educational programming

  • Support for students participating in design or research challenges and competitions in fields of interest to NASA.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible to apply, grant recipients:

  • Must be United States citizens (US permanent residents are ineligible)

  • Must be full-time faculty member at accredited colleges/universities within NY State (includes community colleges and technical schools), or K-12 STEM teachers (or parent of home-schooled student with an approved individualized home instruction plan – IHIP) within NY State

  • Must be full-time faculty or staff member at an educational or learning institution (includes museums, educational centers, or other professional institutions) within New York State

Guidelines:

  • NASA Project Content: All proposed activities must be aligned with NASA priorities addressed by one or more NASA Mission Directorates. All institutions which receive funding under this RFP will be expected to use the awards to provide significant and impactful STEM engagement opportunities to populations in their area.(Please see for our NASA Mission Directorates page for reference: https://www.nyspacegrant.org/nasa-directorates)

  • Cost-Share: All awardees under this RFP are required to provide one-to-one cost share match. Cost-share must be from non-federal sources. Tuition waivers, PI/Mentor effort, cash match, and unrecovered indirect costs are all allowable as cost-share. F&A Rates: F&A costs are allowed.

  • Longitudinal Tracking: Any student receiving $3,000 or more in NASA funding or working 160 hours or more on NASA-supported projects or a combination of both will be longitudinally tracked by NASA for five years. Longitudinally tracked students will need to keep their information current through follow-up correspondence for the 5-year period.

To be considered for funding applicants must exemplify their project/activity’s:

  • Relevance to NASA priorities, aerospace science, technology, or education

  • Impact on New York State

  • Impact on faculty and staff

  • Impact on community

  • Impact on students

  • Feasibility of project
